Info

The Good Soldier Shweik is a 2-D animation feature film based on Jaroslav Haseks world-famous comic tale of a common soldier in the Great War.

Josef Shweik, a common soldier who upon having his uniform on, upheld every letter of the law, every order that was given to him and was so enthusiastic about faithfully serving the Austrian Emperor that no one could decide whether he was merely an imbecile or was craftily undermining the Austrian-Hungarian armys war effort. While in the army, Schweik gets arrested by the secret police after passing some politically sensitive remarks and gets sent to prison. However, due to his law abiding nature, Schweik was deemed an Idiot and gets sent to a mental asylum.

Schweiks stay at the mental asylum is short lived and he once again volunteers for duty in the military, where he is passed from official to official. The story goes on to describe events taking place during the war's first year, as Schweik rejoins the army and has various adventures, first in rear areas, and then during a long anabasis to rejoin his unit on the front lines. As Jaroslav Hasek died before completing his masterpiece, the ending of our film is based on the strange but true story of the 1914 Christmas Truce, spontaneously obeyed by common soldiers of all sides.

The Good Soldier Shweik is a sly, humorous dig at the military. A funny and moving anti-war movie for those who thrive on dark humour.
